Jasprit Bumrah has soared to the top of the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Test rankings for the first time in his professional career after turning up a spectacular performance in India's second Test match against England. Bumrah dethroned fellow countryman Ravichandran Ashwin to take the top spot in the ICC Test rankings, making history as the first fast bowler from India to hold that position.

Only three other Indian players—Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Bishan Singh Bedi—have ever led the bowling standings. The fourth player to do so overall is Bumrah. The 30-year-old's previous best finish was third, which he achieved multiple times.

Bumrah had been ranked fourth before the second Test started, but he has already risen three places to the top. In the updated rankings for Test bowlers, Kagiso Rabada of South Africa, who missed the Proteas' Test series in New Zealand, remains in second place. Ashwin, who has been at the top since March of last year, drops two points to third.

In the second Test in Visakhapatnam, Bumrah scored an incredible 9/91 during his team's 106-run victory over England, tying the series. Bumrah won Player of the Match with a nine-wicket haul, besting opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who made a double century in India's opening innings.

Though conditions for spin bowlers are often better in India, Bumrah has been the country's best bowler by far this series. In particular, Bumrah scored 6/45 for England in the first over of the second Test and 3/46 in the last over. Ollie Pope was removed in the first innings with a devastating swinging yorker that slammed into the base of both the middle and leg stumps, much to the cheers of the cricket world's fans.

Since making his debut in 2018, Bumrah has only appeared in six Test matches in India. He has been injured or sidelined most of the times the country has hosted a red-ball series. In spite of this, in the Tests he has played at home, he has amassed a remarkable 29 wickets at an astonishing average of 13.06. In 34 Test matches, Bumrah has claimed 155 wickets at an average of 20.19.
