Kerala Health Minister: No Immediate Threat from China Outbreak

The minister urged vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with serious health conditions, to wear masks as a precaution

Kerala Health Minister Veena George has assured that there is no immediate threat to the state from the recent outbreak of viral fever and pneumonia in China, despite rising cases. She identified three viruses—Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), new Covid variants, and Influenza A—as driving the surge but clarified that there are no indications of a pandemic.

The minister urged vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with serious health conditions, to wear masks as a precaution. She highlighted the importance of vigilance, given the global health scenario and increased travel, including from China.

HMPV, a long-known virus circulating worldwide, including in Kerala, has been responsible for respiratory issues and pneumonia. However, Veena noted it is not considered highly dangerous. The state is actively monitoring cases, especially in children and the elderly, as part of its established health surveillance systems.

Concerning Covid, the minister emphasized the ongoing risk posed by new variants, particularly to high-risk groups. However, vaccinated individuals are less likely to face severe illness. She assured that Kerala is well-equipped to manage any potential resurgence.

While Influenza A does not currently show concerning mutations, it remains a particular concern for pregnant women. Veena reiterated Kerala’s preparedness to address any emerging health challenges and called for continued adherence to precautionary measures.
