The Punjab Government has taken a significant step in facilitating the oath-taking of Khalistani activist Amritpal Singh, who was recently elected as an MP from Khadoor Sahib. Singh, currently detained under the National Security Act (NSA) in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail, is yet to assume his parliamentary responsibilities. The government has submitted an application to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, seeking parole for Singh to enable him to take the oath of office.

The case against Amritpal Singh was registered in Amritsar, and the Punjab authorities have diligently pursued the necessary legal procedures. Rajdev Singh Khalsa, an ex-MP and spokesperson for Amritpal Singh, confirmed that the application for parole was initially submitted to the Amritsar District Magistrate. Subsequently, it was forwarded to the Punjab Home Secretary, who, in turn, sent it to the Lok Sabha Speaker for consideration.

As per parliamentary norms, an elected member has 60 days to take the oath after being elected. However, Singh’s situation is unique due to his detention under the NSA. Despite the urgency, the Lok Sabha Speaker has not yet taken any action on the application.

In a show of support, rebel leaders visited Amritpal Singh’s parents at their home in Amritsar on Monday morning. The Khadoor Sahib MP-elect remains in jail in Assam, awaiting resolution on his parole request. His case highlights the delicate balance between security concerns and the democratic process, as the nation grapples with complex issues surrounding activism, detention, and parliamentary duties.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the fate of Amritpal Singh’s oath-taking ceremony remains uncertain.
