Chaos Erupts in Kerala Assembly as CM, Opposition Leader Clash

The 12th session of the Kerala Legislative Assembly began in turmoil on Monday, with a heated confrontation between Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Leader of Opposition (LoP) V D Satheesan over the Malappuram-PR agency controversy. Despite the government's agreement to hold a detailed discussion on the matter, the day quickly devolved into chaos.

Tensions mounted when Opposition MLAs stormed the Speaker’s podium, forcing the Watch and Ward staff to intervene. The Speaker, A N Shamseer, abruptly adjourned the House early in the day after the situation escalated. The protests were fueled by the chief minister's remarks about alleged unlawful activities in Malappuram district, a sensitive issue that the Opposition sought to capitalize on politically.

A war of words erupted between the two leaders, with CM Vijayan accusing Satheesan of "substandard" behavior, while Satheesan retaliated by calling the chief minister "corrupt." Despite the government's unexpected concession to discuss the controversy through an adjournment motion, the Opposition continued its protests.

Tensions were high even before the formal session began, as Satheesan accused the Speaker of favoring the government by striking down 49 written questions, many of which were directed at the chief minister. When the Opposition raised concerns about a senior police officer's visit to a top RSS leader, the Speaker silenced their microphones, further fueling the conflict.

With the situation spiraling out of control, Speaker Shamseer quickly pushed through the day’s proceedings before adjourning the House for the day, catching the Opposition off guard. They had anticipated a temporary adjournment and a subsequent debate on the motion later in the session. The unruly scenes underscored the deepening divide between the ruling and Opposition benches.
