Assam cabinet approves most recommendations for Clause 6

In order to execute Clause 6 of the Assam Accord by April 15, 2024, the Assam government has chosen to put most of the panel's recommendations into practice. The panel was established by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

Following a Cabinet meeting in North Lakhimpur town on September 4, 2024, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared that 57 of the 67 recommendations made by the committee led by Justice (retired) Biplab Sarma would be put into practice.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated during a press conference that the cabinet discussed the panel's suggestions for preserving the land, language, and culture of Assamese indigenous people.

The announcement of the suggestions to be adopted is scheduled for the next three to four days in Guwahati. In the meantime, the Group of Ministers will hold discussions on the topic with various organizations, including the All Assam Students' Union (AASU).

He called this a historic turning point for Assam and said it was one of the biggest attempts to safeguard the state's citizens' rights since independence.
