The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has decided to support the UDF government's proposal to reconstitute the Kerala Waqf Board, citing concerns that the current panel does not comply with the eligibility requirements laid down in the Waqf (Amendment) Act, also known as the UMEED Act.

The party's state committee concluded that several members of the board, which was formed during the previous LDF government's tenure, no longer meet the statutory qualifications required under the amended law. According to party sources, the eligibility of chairman K.S. Hamza and members Umar Faizi Mukkam and A.A. Rahim has come under question, prompting IUML to back the government's decision to reorganise the board.

While supporting the reconstitution, the IUML has maintained its opposition to the provision in the UMEED Act requiring the inclusion of two non-Muslim members on the Waqf Board. The party has already challenged this provision before the Supreme Court and continues to stand by that legal challenge.

The issue has further intensified the political dispute over the Waqf Board, with the UDF government defending its decision to seek a fresh board while rejecting claims that it had backed the BJP's challenge against the existing panel. Waqf Minister N. Shamsudeen said the government had sought dismissal of all petitions before the High Court and argued that the previous administration had constituted the board without following the prescribed legal norms, making corrective action necessary.
