Spread over nearly 2,200 acres, the first phase cost between Rs 4,592 crore and Rs 4,750 crore. The airport sports a 3,800-metre Code 4E runway—so it’s ready for big, wide-body planes. Designed for Long-Term Expansion

Right from the start, the airport will handle up to six million passengers every year. But that’s just the beginning. The master plan has room for steady expansion—the goal: to reach up to 40 million passengers annually. That could make Bogapuram one of the largest airports along India’s eastern coast. The state's looking ahead, betting that the Visakhapatnam region will take off as a major economic and aviation hub.

More Than an Airport

Bogapuram isn’t designed to be just another passenger terminal. This project is a full-fledged economic ecosystem. The airport will include a cargo terminal able to process 20,000 metric tonnes per year, opening the doors for pharmaceutical, agriculture, and horticulture exports. For Andhra Pradesh’s exporters, that means much smoother supply chains. The airport’s campus will also feature an aviation hub and training facilities, an aviation university, skill development centre, business parks, hotels, and convention centers. These additions will create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, fueling investment in logistics, hospitality, aviation services, and technology.

Strategic Location with Regional Importance

Set near Bhogapuram in Vizianagaram district, close to National Highway-16, the airport’s location is a clear advantage. While many will link it to Visakhapatnam, Bogapuram will serve a much bigger area—Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, plus southern Odisha and parts of southern Chhattisgarh. For millions who now rely on Visakhapatnam Airport, this means shorter travel times. To make things easier, the government has built seven key approach roads, ensuring smooth road connectivity from Visakhapatnam and the surrounding regions.

A Major Economic Catalyst

State officials see the airport as the growth engine for the Visakhapatnam Economic Region (VER). You only need to look at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport and the transformation around Shamshabad to see why. There, a new airport sparked a business and IT boom. The hope is Bogapuram does the same for North Andhra.

Experts say the airport will attract domestic and international investment, push industrial growth, strengthen the IT and electronics sectors, boost tourism, sharpen export competitiveness, and create huge job opportunities. So, this is more than a transport project—Bogapuram is a long-term economic development strategy.

Ready for Commercial Operations

The airport already holds its Aerodrome Licence from the Ministry of Civil Aviation. Earlier this year, Air India ran a successful validation flight, signaling the facility is ready for action. After the August 1 inauguration, commercial flights should begin around August 17, 2026. Current passenger services at Visakhapatnam’s civil enclave will gradually move to the new airport.
