The Kerala government has ordered two separate investigations into the accident at the Wayanad tunnel road project construction site. One inquiry will examine the technical and legal aspects of the incident, while the other will assess whether the construction company complied with all the conditions attached to the environmental clearance granted by the Union government.
Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan said construction work on the tunnel project will remain suspended until both inquiry reports are submitted and the government is satisfied with their findings. The state has also announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹5 lakh for the families of those who died in the accident.
The Chief Minister said concerns had previously been raised over the environmental impact of the project and noted that the Union government had approved it only after imposing 50 conditions because of the region's ecologically sensitive nature.
On the proposed Adani-MSC arrangement involving the operating company of the Vizhinjam International Seaport, Satheesan clarified that no transfer of shares has taken place. He said the transaction cannot be completed without the consent of the state government and would also require approval from the Union government before being placed before the state cabinet.
He also criticised the CPM for changing its position on the proposed MSC deal after initially supporting it. Explaining why he retained the port portfolio, the Chief Minister said the project would be monitored more effectively from the Chief Minister's Office. He also announced plans to launch a public portal to track the progress of projects included in the government's 100-day programme.
