The Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on August 11 and subsequently cleared by the Rajya Sabha on August 12. The legislation provides for changing the state’s name from Kerala to Keralam and includes the constitutional amendments required to formalise the change.
The move follows a resolution adopted by the Kerala Legislative Assembly in 2024, calling for the state to be renamed Keralam. The state government forwarded the resolution to the Centre in June 2024, initiating the process at the national level.
The proposal was later referred back to the Kerala Assembly for its views. The legislature subsequently adopted a unanimous resolution supporting the proposed change, allowing the Bill to proceed through Parliament.
Under the legislation, the First Schedule of the Constitution will be amended to replace the name Kerala with Keralam. The change is being carried out under Article 3 of the Constitution, which deals with the formation and alteration of states and their names.
The renaming gives official recognition to Keralam, the name traditionally used for the state in Malayalam, while bringing the state’s constitutional name in line with its Malayalam usage.
