Kargil Vijay Diwas 2025: Remembering the Heroes of 1999

"Either I will come back after hoisting the tricolour, or I will come back wrapped in it. But I will come back for sure."– Capt. Vikram Batra.

On July 26, 2025, the 26th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorates the 1999 victory of the Indian Armed Forces over Pakistani intruders in the Kargil region of Jammu and Kashmir, marking a significant military operation in Indian history and deeply ingrained in the hearts of every Indian.

Kargil Vijay Diwas emphasizes the significance of civic responsibility, integrity, unity and active participation of every citizen to protect the national sovereignty as its strength lies in its diversity and democratic foundations. This spirit of collective strength should be carried into education, industry, governance, and politics, demonstrating how every Indian, regardless of religion, region, or language, rallied behind the forces.

The Kargil War was fought in very harsh conditions, with Pakistani intruders disguised as militants. The Indian Army launched Operation Vijay, a three-month military struggle, which resulted in the deaths of 527 Indian soldiers, including iconic heroes like Captain Vikram Batra, Lt. Kargil Vijayant Thapar and Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav, who sacrificed their lives to reclaim every inch of Indian soil.

India is honours these heroes and their sacrifices in various ways. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Draupadi Murmu, and Union Ministers attended the Dras War Memorial to honor the heroes of the 1999 Kargil War. They addressed soldiers and veterans. PM Modi has led the nation in paying tribute to martyrs, promising their legacy to guide future generations. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports will organise a Kargil Vijay Diwas Padyatra involving youth, veterans, and citizens as part of the Viksit Bharat campaign. Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi delivered a powerful message warning the supporters of terrorism. He emphasized India's uncompromising stance and described Operation Sindoor as strategic resolve. He also announced the transformation of two infantry brigades into the elite Rudra Brigade.

Therefore India must continue to carry forward its brave sons' legacy, not just in memory but also in action, as the mountains of Kargil continue to echo with the cries of courage, sacrifice, and victory.
