Google’s recent decision to allocate $15 billion toward establishing its largest AI hub outside the United States, specifically in Visakhapatnam, signifies a major development for both the city and India’s broader technological landscape. This substantial investment is poised to transform Visakhapatnam from a relatively quiet coastal area into a significant global center for technology and artificial intelligence. As a result, India’s position within the international tech sector is likely to be strengthened, marking a notable step forward in the country’s ongoing digital and economic evolution.
Andhra Pradesh’s financial capital and seashore city - Visakhapatnam is poised to emerge as a significant global hub for artificial intelligence following Google’s unprecedented $15 billion investment in the city. This initiative marks Google’s largest financial commitment outside the United States, signalling Visakhapatnam’s transformation from a traditional port city into a major center for technological innovation and digital infrastructure.
The project will span five years, commencing in 2026 and concluding in 2030. Central to this endeavour is the construction of a gigawatt-scale data center campus equipped with advanced computing resources, including Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) and Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). These facilities are designed to support deep learning, neural network training, and large-scale AI applications. The infrastructure is projected to significantly impact key sectors in India such as healthcare, agriculture, logistics, and finance by enabling the rapid development and deployment of AI-driven solutions.
The initiative is collaborative in nature, with Google partnering with Adani Group and Airtel. Airtel will participate in establishing both a specialized data center and a state-of-the-art cable landing station, which will accommodate Google’s new international subsea cables. This will connect Visakhapatnam directly to Google’s global network infrastructure. Additionally, AdaniConneX—a joint venture involving the Adani Group—will play a critical role in constructing the data center campus and supporting green energy initiatives.
The project has garnered strong endorsement at the highest levels. Prime Minister Narendra Modi characterized the investment as a major step toward “democratizing technology” and supporting the vision of “Viksit Bharat.” Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai and Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian have both highlighted the strategic importance of this investment, with Kurian noting it as Google’s largest AI hub investment outside the United States.
Economic projections are substantial. Official estimates suggest the data center will create approximately 188,000 direct and indirect jobs and make a significant contribution to Andhra Pradesh’s GDP. Plans are underway to establish an “Emerging Technologies Cluster” near the data center, with the goal of attracting additional AI and cloud technology firms, thereby consolidating Visakhapatnam’s status as a leading technology destination.
The formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the project was signed in New Delhi on October 14, 2025, with key government officials, including Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, in attendance. The data center cluster is scheduled to become operational by July 2028.
