Delay in UDF, LDF meetings exposes alliance rifts in Kerala

The prolonged delay in convening coordination meetings has disrupted the functioning of both the UDF and LDF in Kerala, affecting governance and coordinated political action

The prolonged delay in convening coordination meetings has disrupted the functioning of both the UDF and LDF in Kerala, affecting governance and coordinated political action. The UDF has not held a state-level leadership meeting since the V.D. Satheesan government assumed office, leaving several contentious policy decisions and the allocation of board and corporation chairmanships unresolved. Alliance partners have expressed concern over the government's decisions being taken without prior consultation, while party sources attribute the delay partly to internal issues within the Congress and communication gaps between the Chief Minister, ministers and the party leadership.

The LDF has also not convened its state committee meeting since its Assembly election setback. The delay is reportedly linked to differences between the CPI(M) and CPI over the CPI's demand for the Deputy Leader of the Opposition post. The dispute has weakened coordination within the opposition, preventing a collective review of the political situation and a united response to issues such as the proposed Adani-MSC stake transfer, controversial appointments and policy decisions. Instead, constituent parties have been holding separate protests.

According to LDF sources, internal differences within the CPI(M), including criticism of State Secretary M.V. Govindan and Opposition Leader Pinarayi Vijayan after the election defeat, have further delayed the meeting. Party leaders also believe the CPI(M) has avoided a comprehensive review of its electoral setback to escape difficult questions over the loss.
