‘Bonalu’ (Special offerings to local goddess) season has swept through the Hyderabad city, crackling with colour and energy. All over Hyderabad and Secunderabad, you hear the steady beat of drums and see women balancing decorated pots over their heads, making their way to Mahankali temples. It’s not just a festival—it’s a living, breathing tradition. Every July and August, during the Hindu month of Ashada, lakhs of devotees pour into the temples. They bring Bonam—specially cooked meals—as thanks to the Goddess Mahankali, praying for their families and neighborhoods.
History Runs Deep in Every Step
You can’t separate Bonalu from Hyderabad’s story. It’s been part of the city’s soul for over two centuries, tracing its roots back to the plague epidemic of 1813. Back then, legend says a battalion from Hyderabad prayed to Mahakali in Ujjain, desperate for relief from the plague. When the disease faded, they kept their promise by offering rice to the Goddess. That act of gratitude became Bonalu—a ritual that grew and spread, becoming one of Telangana’s signature celebrations.
Everything in this festival is loaded with meaning. “Bonam” comes from the Telugu word for meal—Bhojanam. Women carry brass or clay pots filled with rice, jaggery, curd, turmeric. Sprigs of neem leaves, a burning lamp on the top of the pot. They walk to the temple surrounded by the clamor of drummers, vibrant folk dances, the high-stepping Pothuraju, and the symbolic Ghatam procession. It’s chaotic, loud, joyful—unmistakably Bonalu.
More Than a One-Day Affair
Bonalu isn’t just an event; it’s a season. Instead of a single day, it stretches for weeks across Hyderabad and Secunderabad. Every major temple gets its own day in the spotlight. The festival opened on July 16 at the ancient Sri Jagadamba Mahankali Temple up at Golconda Fort. That’s traditional—the first prayers there set everything in motion. After that, the celebrations keep rolling, temple by temple, and straight through the start of August.
Where the Crowds Gather?

Secunderabad’s Sri Ujjaini Mahakali Temple… That’s where the biggest crowds converge, from Regimental Bazaar to Chilkalguda. Processions wind through the streets, dancers and musicians moving in a wild mass of color and music.
Balkampet Yellamma Temple… Another key stop—this place draws huge turnouts, filling the temple compound with energy.
Old City Hyderabad…. Bonalu’s final phase lands at Lal Darwaza, Akkanna Madanna, Shah Ali Banda—temples that have hosted these rituals for generations.
