PM Modi Takes Center Stage at G7 Summit in Italy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his first foreign trip of his third term by attending the G7 Summit in Italy, where he engaged in crucial discussions with global leaders. Modi, having recently taken office, met with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and French President Emmanuel Macron, but the highlight was his meeting with US President Joe Biden.

The Modi-Biden interaction occurred nearly seven months after the US alleged an Indian link to a foiled plot to murder Sikh separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. After their meeting, Modi tweeted that India and the US would continue working together for global good. This meeting underscored the strengthening ties between the two nations despite past allegations.

Amid strained Indo-Canadian relations over the murder of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar last year, Modi had a brief interaction with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Modi acknowledged the meeting on social media, writing, "Met Canadian PM @JustinTrudeau at the G7 Summit." Relations between India and Canada have been tense since Trudeau’s allegations of Indian agents' involvement in Nijjar's killing, which India has strongly denied.

Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra stated that India's main issue with Canada is the political space Ottawa provides to anti-India elements.

During the summit, Modi addressed the event, emphasizing the importance of ending monopolies in technology, particularly focusing on artificial intelligence. On the sidelines, he also met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, showcasing India's broadening diplomatic engagements.

The invitation to PM Modi to the G7 Summit highlights India’s growing significance in global strategies, especially in countering China's rapid rise. Besides India, the hosts invited leaders from 11 developing countries, including those in the Indo-Pacific region, underscoring a broader coalition aimed at fostering international cooperation and addressing global challenges. Modi's active participation at the summit signifies India's critical role on the world stage.
