COP29 conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, to reduce the adverse effects of climate change has ended without proposing any fruitful action. Conference of the Parties (COP), an annual international climate summit of the United National Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was aimed to bring a conclusion over climate change debate. World leaders met to assess progress on climate change, negotiate solutions to tackle climate change, review the implementation of the UNFCCC and to make decision to promote the effective implementation of the UNFCCC.
The 12-day talks, which began on the 11th and ended on the 22nd of November, have once again exposed the selfishness of the developed countries and their partial vision of the environment. They have acted with the utmost wisdom to blame the world for the pollution they are creating and the sin of carbon emissions and to wash their hands of it.
No binding over on Kyoto Protocol
As per the Kyoto Protocol, which established legally binding obligations for developed countries to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, but they are not binding over. The Paris Agreement also aimed on legally binding international treaty on climate change that aims to limit global warming. Countries have borders, but there are no control lines for the spread of carbon emissions that destroy the environment and their consequences.
75% of Carbon Emissions from developed nations
Developed countries are burning natural resources for all the comforts they have been enjoying for years and releasing harmful emissions onto the planet. Rich countries account for 75 percent of the carbon emissions released in the world. This emission disaster, which is being driven by the reckless use of natural resources, is eroding the earth's green belt and putting the entire world at risk. While this sin is entirely the fault of the rich countries, the developing countries are being forced to bear the consequences. The developed countries are not fully prepared to accept this fact and play a corresponding role in environmental protection.
World leaders are rigid on climate deal
Despite the conferences held for days together, developed countries remain silent. At the COP 29 conference, the developing countries stood together and reminded the rich countries of their specific responsibility. With the legitimate interest of 'paying as much as they are spending', they demanded that 1.3 trillion dollars be spent annually on environmental protection. But the readiness of the rich countries stopped at 300 billion dollars! Earlier summits focused on keeping ‘Loss and Damage fund’ for taking steps for climate issues. The fund, which channels financial support to developing countries that are vulnerable to damages from climate change.
It is the responsibility of the rich countries to provide full funding and encouragement to the developing countries that are contributing to the green prosperity. It is not an excuse to abandon that minimum discretion and settle for a few small concessions, and to act as if it is a sign of their generosity. Moreover, it is doubtful that even such words will be put into practice. In 2009, the developed countries agreed to give 100 billion dollars annually under climate finance. But, in the last thirteen years, they have not followed the commitment.
Takeaways from Azarbaijan summit
Developing countries protest against the biased attitude of developed countries at every COP conference. But there is no change in the attitude of the superpowers. This was also evident in the recent Azerbaijan conference. The superpowers, who want to expand their businesses solely for the sake of profit, need to focus on climate protection with sincerity. Otherwise, the planet will fall into further danger. This will put the survival of developing countries in question.
