"I Stopped Seven Wars": Why Trump Repeating This False Claim?

It's absurd that the U.S., using veto power and military force to instigate global conflicts, has celebrated Donald Trump as someone who stopped wars.

It is ridiculous and inappropriate that the United States, a country using the veto and military clout to instigate conflicts globally, has had its president, Donald Trump, cloaked in glory as having stopped wars. Speaking at the 80th anniversary session of the UN, Trump claimed to have stopped seven wars, and directly challenged the UN to do more in preventing conflicts. These statements are even more disturbing coming from a man who has always weakened the UN and disregarded its resolutions.

The UN came into being to replace the League of Nations, which floundered for barely 26 years. This year sees the launching of a campaign, the "UN 80 Initiative," to awaken the sleeping giant that is the UN. Yet heavy blockage is put in the way by rich countries. For the past seven years, the UN has been in dire straits financially because 118 countries, among them the United States-a country that fancies itself as a leader of the world-have either not been paying their dues entirely or on time. As at 11 March this year, only 75 of the 193 member states had paid in full. Most essentially, the first of the wars that Trump claimed to have stopped was the India-Pakistan); while Pakistan agrees, our own foreign ministry does not. Another war Trump claimed to have stopped was the one between Israel and Iran.

Nevertheless, it was the United States that backed Israel to bring the conflict not only from Gaza but also from Iran with the United States providing Israel with full military and financial support. Out of under Trump's administration, Israel also directly school Iranian nuclear installations. Motivated by this constant support, Israel committed a military strike against the U.S. ally Qatar in Doha and thereby extended the war. The event marked the beginning of Arab nations endorsing an alliance similar to NATO.

Moreover, while the world shows an indignant stance over the killing of Palestinian civilians in Gaza, particularly children and women, full backing is provided to Israel by the U.S. and other Western countries. Despite the support of an increasing number of states for the two-state solution for Israel and Palestine, the U.S. still vetoes all the resolutions by using its veto power.

Trump claims that he terminated all wars which are only minor border skirmishes and several in-fighting between small countries thereafter. America is a top superpower that often hamstrings the peace activities of the UN by abusing its veto power while the UN faces a shortage of funds. Trump’s attack on the UN as a fake institution that is too weak and solves problems with words only seems like it springs from his annoyance that the UN does not always back his warmongering and even tries to be contrary. In spite of Trump’s criticism, it is a positive change that the UN Secretary General has emphasized that development is based on peace and harmony.

Would being "at war" mean that Trump has to make false accusations, put a blockade of warships around Venezuela, threaten Afghanistan with an attack if it refuses giving him an airbase, or announce that he would invade and conquer Greenland, a territory of his ally Denmark, if it wasn't given to him? Trump should be the one to provide us with the answers. Supplying Taiwan with arms and subsequently starting a war in Afghanistan are steps to achieve the motive of involving China in the conflict. The US and Israel have declared with no shame that the UN institutions established for the observance of international law are illegal.

There is a need for groups such as the BRICS Plus coalition and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, which together more than half of the world's population, to be more powerful. The UN is failing to prevent international peace and security because not all member states have equal voting rights. The UN along with its affiliated organizations should be immediately democratized. After Trump's comments at the UN contrary to our national interests on issues like oil imports from Russia, tariffs, and immigration, it is time for our country to change its position. India is obliged to implement the democratization of the UN.
